Yan Jian is an Associate Professor of comparative politics at School of International Relations and Diplomacy, Beijing Foreign Studies University. Before joining the SIRD, he was a senior research fellow at China Center for Comparative Politics and Economics (2005-2018) and Institute of Party History and Literature (2018-2022). Trained with a background of political science, Dr. Yan received his bachelor degree from Shanxi University (1998-2002), his Master’s from Beijing Normal University (2002-2005) and his Doctorate from the Renmin University of China (2008-2012). Dr. Yan was once a visiting scholar to Boston University (2010-2011) and the University of Washington, Tacoma (2017-2018). His articles have appeared in such journals as The China Journal, China: An International Journal, Sustainability, Journal of Chinese Governance, and Journal of Modern Chinese History. He is the author of The Chinese Communist Party and China’s Transformation (Central Compilation and Translation Press, 2013).
Dr. Yan’s areas of expertise include African fragile states, history and theories of state building and Chinese local governance. His major English publication includes:
